Know How The Interests For Indexed Accounts Are Determined

Universal Life Insurance, the indexed universal life insurance, allows you to allocate your premiums to any combination of available indexed account options. When you make a premium payment, an expense charge is deducted from each paid premium. The premium expense charge is guaranteed not to increase, and the specified percentage of the premium expense charge is outlined in the contract. The remaining amount, the net premium, is then allocated to either a single-indexed account option or a combination of the three options based on your instructions.

Net premiums allocated to the indexed accounts are initially held in a holding account until a new indexed account segment starts. Once a new segment begins, the allocation to the indexed accounts is finalized. These segments commence on the 15th of each month. Hence, this blog will explore the interests specified for indexed accounts.

Determination Of Interest Rate:

The interest added to your Indexed Account(s) after each segment will be based on the index’s performance, such as the cap rate, the index floor, and participation rates.

Cap Rate:

The cap rate applies to the balanced and ultimate index account options, setting a maximum limit on the annual return rate of an index that influences the interest credited to the Indexed Account.

The guaranteed minimum cap rate is 3.0%. Also, a current cap rate is occasionally established for a specific segment duration exceeding the guaranteed minimum cap rate. In such instances, the current cap rate may vary for each index, and indexed universal life insurance will determine these rates before the relevant segment start date, remaining unchanged throughout that segment’s term.

The decision to establish a current cap rate above the guaranteed minimum cap rate considers factors such as investment returns, interest rates, market volatility, claims, reinsurance costs, expenses, and taxes, reflecting our expectations of future experiences with these elements. The annual report provides information on the current cap rates, and you can contact our office at any time for details on the cap rates applicable to your contract outside of the annual report.

Participation Rate:

This interest rate percentage determines how much the interest is credited to the Indexed Account. The guaranteed minimum participation rate for the conservative indexed account option is 50%, while the balanced and ultimate indexed account options are 100%.

However, there may be instances to establish and apply a current participation rate for a specific segment duration that exceeds the guaranteed minimum participation rate. In such cases, (1) the current participation rate may vary for each index, and (2) the indexed universal life insurance will set and maintain these current participation rates before the relevant segment start date throughout the term of that specific segment.

Also, the change in the current participation rate(s) considers factors such as investment returns, interest rates, market volatility, claims, reinsurance costs, expenses, and taxes. It is important to note that any established participation rate is guaranteed only for the segment duration.

Index Floor:

In this interest type, the interest credited to the Indexed Account(s) is assured never to fall below 0% throughout the contract’s duration.

Hence, when the segment maturity date is reached, the interest rate will be credited by multiplying the index change with the account value for index credited interest calculation.
